I only had a 2.71 GPA, and Delta requires you to have a LEAST a 2.75. Fall 2012 came along, and BOOM an interest flyer went up and we all went into panic mode. I absolutely loved these group of girls, since I was then living in Nashville, I would often times crash on their couch. We would talk for hours about Delta, planning to go to their community events, finding any reason to talk to the current Deltas on the yard, or even share things that we found out about the organization (Yes, we strolled around too lol). One interest in particular was Delta Sigma Theta. For the first time, I had female friends with similar interest. It was a total of 25 of us with only 5 of them being guys. My AKPsi line brothers meant everything to me because I did not have many friends. Joining AKPsi was probably one of the best things I did in college. I eventually moved back home to help my mother out, and by the end of that school year I had gained 30 pounds. I started to cope with my feeling via food and when I made comments about my weight with my friends they would say, “oh you’re not fat, you’re just tall.” I temporarily believed that statement, but at the end of that year I lost another scholarship. I turned to the few things that did make me happy at that time- Fried Chicken Wednesday, Hot Funyuns with dip, a foot long from Subway, cookies, and more cookies. I wanted him to be there for me, but he was not. I started to see the true colors of the guy that I was dating, once I was dealing with the situation at home. While dealing with my mothers ‘man problems,’ I was having problems of my own. If I went into the details of her and the divorce, she would kill me so I’ll stop there, but just know that shit got REAL. Another challenge came my way: my mom and her husband were getting a divorce. Balancing two jobs, a man (that was not even fully mine), school, and now AKPsi, was very challenging for me.
I had to pick up another job to pay for my tuition, and my grades were already slipping. A year after she got married, I lost one of my scholarships due to her being over income. Soon after, they purchased a home together and a car that would be adequate for our blended family. Prior to this, we lived a simple life in an apartment. Right before I left for school, my mom got married. Food had became my place of comfort and happiness, all of which would be needed when shit hit the fan. I probably sinned the most on Wednesdays due to gluttony. It was one day out of the week that made me SUPER happy, and that was FRIED CHICKEN WEDNESDAY! McCallies at the time, had THE best fried chicken and ranch. I was going out to eat with this guy almost every night, as well as utilizing my $500 flex bucks & swipes, during the day. Although I did move off of campus, I still kept my meal plan. In 2011, I got into a ‘situationship’ that ultimately made me lazier. By the end of my freshman year, I had gained 25 pounds (so much for freshman 15).Ī little weight gain did not stop me from meeting new people. After a few bad experiences, I decided that it was not for me, but I gravitated towards Subway chocolate chip cookies.
Once in college, I went WILD with over consuming sodas after all, it was unlimited also Free 99! As a typical college student, I would also dabble into alcohol as well. Growing up, my mom made my brother, my cousin, and I drink water if we depleted all of the juice or soda that we had in the house. I no longer had to hear, “well do you got Subway money…do you got Pizza Hut money,” because now I did and I did not have to ask for permission.
I was amazed at the amount of food options that was were available, and I took full advantage of those options.
Our cafe consisted of a burger bar, salad bar, pizza bar, Ice cream, unlimited sodas, and a hot table that changed daily. With our flex bucks, we could chose from several fast food places on campus. My meal plan included $500 flex bucks, and 5 swipes per week in our cafe. At Middle Tennessee State University, they required that all freshmen staying on campus purchase a meal plan. I was first in my family to transition from high school directly to college. I graduated high school in May, 2010 and started college August, 2010.
Within three years, I gained 70 pounds and went into a sever state of depression. Once I reached college I started living up to the name, ‘Big Niece’. When my friend called me ‘Big Niece’, it was not because I was overweight, but because I was 5’10 and he was 5’5. While in high school, I was pretty athletic and stood as a tower over my peers. I was given the name two years prior in high school, by David D. The correct lyrics to B.M.F are: “I think I’m Big Meech, Larry Hoover…”.When it came on in the club, my friends and I would replace the words Big Meech to Big Niece. In 2010, Rick Ross came out with a song called, B.M.F featuring Styles P.
